Wine tourism in the DO Costers del Segre: Ponent wines near Lleida

25 October 20262 min read

Ponent isn’t just olive oil and fruit country. Between the plains of the Segre and the Pre-Pyrenean ranges lies a young designation of origin full of personality: the DO Costers del Segre. Visiting its wineries is a delicious way to get to know the area.

What the DO Costers del Segre is

The designation of origin was created in 1988 and today brings together dozens of wineries across the Lleida area. It is divided into six sub-zones, each with its own climate and landscape:

  • Artesa
  • Valls del Riu Corb
  • Les Garrigues
  • Raimat
  • Pallars Jussà (added in 1998)
  • Segrià (added in 1998)

Grape varieties

The DO combines traditional and international varieties. Among the reds you’ll find Garnacha, Ull de Llebre (Tempranillo), Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Trepat; among the whites, Macabeo, Xarel·lo, Parellada, Chardonnay, White Garnacha and Riesling.

How to plan a winery route

  1. Choose one or two sub-zones per day: Les Garrigues and the Segrià are the closest to Llardecans.
  2. Book your visits in advance: many wineries only open by appointment.
  3. Choose a designated driver or use the spittoon at tastings.
  4. Combine it with food: many wineries offer pairings with local produce.

On the DO website and the Costers del Segre wine route you’ll find the wineries open to visitors and their activities.

A weekend of wine, olive oil and relaxation

Suggestion: on Saturday, visit one or two wineries and have lunch in the area; on Sunday, an olive oil tasting from Les Garrigues and a walk among dry-stone huts. And in the evening, open the bottles you’ve bought in the garden at Cal Xolva.
