New Year's Eve in a rural house near Lleida: ideas for celebrating as a group

24 October 20264 min read

There’s a question that comes back every year around October: “So what are we doing for New Year’s Eve?” A restaurant with a set menu, a party in a room full of strangers, or someone’s flat where you don’t all fit… More and more groups of friends and families are choosing another option: spending New Year’s Eve in a rural house, with everyone you love under one roof and no clock to watch.

At Cal Xolva, a stone house in Llardecans, in the Segrià, that’s exactly what we offer: a whole house just for you, about 30 minutes from Lleida, so the last night of the year can be exactly how you want it.

Why a rural house for New Year’s Eve

The beauty of a rural house is that the party doesn’t end when the restaurant closes. You can have dinner at nine or ten, ring in the New Year in the dining room, step out onto the terrace for a toast and keep chatting for as long as you like. And the next morning, nobody has to drive home in the early hours.

  • The whole group together, from dinner on the 31st to breakfast on 1 January.
  • Your own pace: no dinner sittings, no rush and no music you didn’t choose.
  • Better value per person than a New Year’s party or set menu, especially as a group.
  • Safety: after the party, straight to bed. Nobody has to drive.

How to organise dinner without anyone ending up exhausted

The secret is sharing the work. Before you come, set up a group chat and have each couple or family take care of one part of the dinner: one brings the starters, another the first course, another the main course and another dessert. That way nobody spends the afternoon of the 31st in the kitchen.

Make the most of local produce too. In the villages of the Segrià and Les Garrigues you’ll find freshly pressed new olive oil, nuts, cured meats and local wines. Bread rubbed with tomato and a drizzle of good local oil is half a dinner already.

A short checklist so you don’t forget anything

  • A shared shopping list, made a few days in advance.
  • Grapes for the midnight chimes (in portions of twelve, which saves time!).
  • Well-chilled cava or wine.
  • Music: a playlist made by everyone so there’s a bit of everything.
  • Board games and cards for after dinner.
  • Warm clothes for heading out to the terrace for a toast.

1 January: a day to take it slow

The first day of the year at Cal Xolva usually starts late, with a long breakfast. Afterwards, a walk along the dry farmland paths around Llardecans, among olive and almond trees, is perfect for some fresh air.

If you stay an extra night, you can take a day trip to Siurana, just over an hour away, or discover corners of the village itself such as the Tomàs Piñol Pharmacy. And at night, with the clear winter sky, it’s well worth looking up.
