What to do in Lleida on a weekend: the Seu Vella, the river and great food

25 October 20263 min read

Lleida is a city that surprises anyone who takes the time to discover it. On top of the hill, the Seu Vella (old cathedral) watches over the plain; below, the River Segre, the shopping streets and produce-driven cooking that deserves a whole weekend.

From Cal Xolva, in Llardecans, you’re about 30 minutes away by car: you can spend the day in the city and come back to sleep in a quiet village.

The Seu Vella and the hill

Construction of Lleida’s old cathedral began in 1203 and it is one of the jewels of Catalan Gothic. It’s well worth going inside, walking around the cloister, with spectacular views over the plain, and, if your legs are up to it, climbing the bell tower.

On the same hill are the remains of the King’s Castle, or La Suda, which complete the visit.

Around the city centre

  • The Eix Comercial: one of the longest pedestrian shopping streets in Catalonia, ideal for strolling and shopping.
  • The Seu Nova (new cathedral) and the streets of the old town.
  • The museums: the Museu de Lleida is a good way to understand the history of the area.
  • The River Segre: the riverside promenades are perfect for walking or cycling.
  • The Camps Elisis: the city’s great park, where the Aplec del Caragol snail festival is held every May.

What to eat in Lleida

  • Caragols a la llauna (snails cooked on a tray), Lleida’s signature dish.
  • Coca de recapte (flatbread with roasted vegetables) and cured meats from Ponent.
  • Stone fruit from Lleida’s orchards in summer.
  • Wines from the DO Costers del Segre and olive oil from Les Garrigues.
