When we think of Llardecans’ heritage, what usually comes to mind are its dry-stone buildings, its dry farmland landscapes or its farming history. But the village also hides a much less known and equally exceptional treasure: the old Tomàs Piñol Pharmacy, popularly known as Cal Tomàs de l’Apotecari (the Apothecary’s House).
It is one of the best-preserved historic pharmacies in Catalonia, a real window onto how pharmacy was practised in rural villages during the 19th and 20th centuries.
A pharmacy with more than 150 years of history
The Tomàs Piñol Pharmacy was founded in the mid-19th century and remained in operation through several generations of pharmacists from the same family until the end of the 20th century.
For decades, this establishment was much more than a pharmacy. It was a point of reference for the people of Llardecans and the surrounding villages, where medicines were prepared, remedies dispensed and health advice offered at a time when medical services were not as accessible as they are today.
What makes the Tomàs Piñol Pharmacy so special?
What makes this pharmacy unique is its extraordinary state of preservation.
Unlike other historic establishments where only a few objects or decorative features have survived, Cal Tomàs de l’Apotecari retains much of its original ensemble. The building, the furniture, the utensils, the documents and many of the materials used by the pharmacists are still part of the same space, which has reached us practically intact.
A journey into the past among jars, scales and recipe books
The surviving items include original wooden shelving, ceramic jars, glass bottles, precision scales, pharmaceutical instruments and many historical documents.
Old prescription books, compounding manuals, account books and a valuable specialist library have also been recovered, helping us understand how pharmacy evolved over the last two hundred years.
Walking through this space means discovering an era when many medicines were handmade in the pharmacy itself and when the apothecary played a key role in village life.
Recovering a unique heritage
Aware of the exceptional value of this legacy, various conservation and restoration works have been carried out in recent years.
This work has made it possible to recover original features, catalogue hundreds of items and preserve historical documents that help explain not only the history of the pharmacy but also an important part of the history of Llardecans.
This conservation effort has turned the Tomàs Piñol Pharmacy into one of the most unusual heritage gems in the village.
A future space to discover the history of Llardecans
The aim is for this heritage to be open to visitors and to become a space for cultural and historical outreach.
Its future opening to the public will reveal a little-known part of local history and offer visitors a different experience, complementing the other heritage attractions of Llardecans.
A heritage that tells the story of a village
Beyond its objects and documents, the Tomàs Piñol Pharmacy holds the memory of many generations of villagers. It bears witness to an era, a profession and a way of understanding health and community life that are part of the village’s history.
That’s why visiting it – when it becomes possible – won’t just mean discovering an old pharmacy, but also getting to know an essential part of the soul of Llardecans.
